On20 Shay Concept.

Description

Well a little while back I finally set about drawing up a concept for my wagon top boilered On20 shay. And so I now present to you the concept!!

The idea behind the construction of the model is that it would use the chassis/mechanism of a MDC Roundhouse HOn3 gauge Shay kit for HO scale. EVERYTHING, aside from the motor, is to be digarded. (Not really, all those parts will go into my junk box) Along with the kit I intend on getting the NWSL regear kits as well as a remotoring kit, if I can find one.

The next step to acquire a Wiseman Model Services' Sn3 Wagon Top Boiler Shay conversion kit, specifically designed to fit on the MDC Shay kit chassis. The only problem with this particular kit is that I want to model a shay that only has 2 cyliders/pistons, where as the WMS kit is meant for a 3 cylinder locomotive. I believe that they work well wit customers for special orders and thus that may be able to supply me with a 2 cylinder piston part(s) to replace the 3 cylinders provided. If not I'm certain I could acquire the needed parts from PSC. (Precision Scale Co.)

After that a Cab will have to be either scratch built or kitbashed. "O" scale detail parts such as domes, headlight(s), bell, ect... will be added to make the loco fit better into O scale. I may need to scratch build or bash a new tender unit and also figure out how I can at least fit/install DCC. And of course a sound system as I try to do with all my model projects.

I drew a lot of inspiration from the Gilpin Tramway #1, a 2ft gauge 2 cylinder shay with a wagon top boiler. However my version here is still freelanced. One thing that bugged the crap out of me was that the drawing of the loco ended up being shifted too far to the left and not centered. So I "ballanced" out the concept by drawing one of my favorite film characters of the "Big Screen"!! I bet you can't tell who it is!! XD ;p (I wanted to put some quote of his from one of those movies, but I couldn't think of one) "Clint" there, unfortunately, I drew a tad small and the Shay ended up looking more like a 2ft gauge loco rather than a 20in gauge one.

So now the only question left is what kind of color scheme to paint it in! I honestly don't have a clue. I want to do something similar to the Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad #1, but that what I also based my BTMt.RR geared locos on and I envision the tramway this loco would run on a separate company. Not affiliated with the BTMt.RR with the exception of some possible Dual Gauge trackage and transporting ore and materials to and from the mines to the "Bigger" trains for my primary On30 route. So when it comes to a color scheme I'm open to suggestions!

Well that's about it for this thing. I hope you all like it and PLEASE, do leave comments!!!

A shay on a tramway! My tramway steamers are still in my head, but are designed to be a removable, boxy shell atop an 0-4-0 tank engine, that way I can have my 0-4-0 tankers and a tramway loco in O when I need it! Either that, or another Mantua 0-4-0, but with other changes.
